Kathy’s father Langdon was employed as a technical engineer and her mother Bertye was a homemaker. She completed her education from White Station High School.
While she was still in school, she discovered her love for acting and aimed to make a career out of it. She enrolled at Southern Methodist University. She graduated in 1969 majoring in theatre and drama. Kathy Bates was a prominent member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority while she was in University.
She shifted to New York to pursue her acting career. When in New York, she took up odd jobs to survive in the city.

Early in her career, Kathy was a super-slim (perfect actress) shaped but during her course of action, she started to gain weight. Her weight battle resulted in Kathy’s health issues. In 2003, she found out that she had cancer but she kept it a secret for six years.
This diagnoses served as a wakeup call for Kathy and she took charge of her life and started to be more active and eat better. Bates also revealed that her health problems wound up leaving her with a condition “Lymphedema”.
Lymphedema is a condition which happens when fluid is retained in a certain area as lymph nodes can’t process the fluids. Her over-weight resulted in the same. Bates was able to slim down a bit with proper eating activity and after fighting off cancer.
She quit soda cold turkey after finding out that she was at high risk for diabetes. Kathy Bates chose to have a double mastectomy to remove cancer from her breast. She struggled with removing her breast more than treating her ovarian cancer. When she was dealing with Ovarian cancer, she would go to chemo treatments alone and back to work.
After beating cancer, Kathy Bates has now become an outspoken ambassador for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network in the fight against the lymphedema.

After Kathy Bates completing her education and earning a majors degree in theatre and arts, moved to New York to focus on acting. She debuted with Taking off in 1971 in which she played a minor role. Kathy eventually established herself as a stage actress finding her share of success with the off-Broadway play Vanities in the mid-1970s.
She made her Broadway debut in 1980 with Goodbye, Fidel and soon Kathy went onto originate Stella May in Come Back To The Five and Dime Jimmy Dean. Kathy Bates was one of the top actresses in the field of Theatre, scooping a Tony nomination for her turn as a suicidal daughter in Night Mother.
